Preface

As a professional in the membrane industry, polypropylene ( PP ) is one of the raw materials we encounter most frequently in our daily lives. Thanks to its lightweight, temperature resistance, corrosion resistance, ease of processing, and recyclability, it has become the world’s highest-volume general-purpose plastic, permeating such diverse fields as film materials, everyday consumer goods, industry, and new energy. Many people only know that it is BOPP membrane, CPP Although polypropylene is the core raw material for membranes, its applications have long since extended far beyond the membrane industry—ranging from small plastic tableware to large automotive components. This article systematically breaks down the key application areas of polypropylene, balancing technical depth with accessibility to help professionals in the membrane industry broaden their perspectives.

I. Membrane Materials Sector: The Core Application Domain of Polypropylene (the Core of the Laminating Film Industry)

Polypropylene is a core raw material in the film industry; through various processing techniques, it can be transformed into a wide range of functional films that are extensively used in packaging, protective applications, and other scenarios. The key products include:

(1) Packaging-grade polypropylene film (the largest in consumption and the most widely used)

Thanks to their transparency, moisture resistance, and ease of heat sealing, these films hold a significant share of the packaging film market. The specific subcategories and end products are as follows:

1.   Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene Film ( BOPP Film): The most mainstream polypropylene film, characterized by high transparency and excellent stiffness; various subtypes are tailored to different applications:

  • Common BOPP Clear film: Used for packaging food and daily chemical products such as biscuits and shampoo; can be used to make bags on its own or laminated with other films.
  • BOPP Aluminized film: Offers light-blocking, moisture-proof, and freshness-preserving properties, commonly used in packaging for tea, candies, and other products to minimize external environmental influences.
  • BOPP Heat-seal film: Excellent heat-sealing performance, suitable for use as the inner layer in packaging and compatible with automatic packaging machines, enabling high-speed packaging of snacks and daily necessities.

2.   Cast polypropylene film ( CPP Membrane): Uniform thickness, good flexibility, no stretching, non-oriented; classified into three types:

  • General CPP GCPP ) Membrane: thickness 25–50 μm , often with OPP Film lamination, used for gift and apparel packaging;
  • Steaming and boiling grade CPP RCPP ) Membrane: thickness 60–80 μm , can withstand 121°C High-temperature steam sterilization is used for the inner layer of packaging for meat and other foods that require sterilization.
  • Aluminum-plated grade CPP MCPP ) Film: Compatible with aluminum-plating processes, used for barrier packaging of food and daily necessities to reduce oxidative spoilage.

3.   Polypropylene blown film: a simple process that produces a flexible, puncture-resistant film, suitable for shopping bags, garbage bags, agricultural films, and more, at a low cost.

(2) Protective Polypropylene Films (with Prominent Functional Properties)

These films, after being modified and processed, exhibit specific protective properties and are suitable for a wide range of applications:

1.   Polypropylene protective film: used on the surfaces of furniture, panels, and metal products to provide scratch resistance, dust protection, and corrosion resistance; a specialized segment within the laminating film industry.

2.   Ultra-thin polypropylene film: thickness 2.4–4.0 μm , with excellent dielectric properties, it is used in film capacitors and is suitable for new-energy vehicles, 5G and high-end sectors;

3.   Agricultural protective film: used for greenhouse coverings and plastic mulch; offers weather resistance, light transmission, and heat retention to promote crop growth.
